World Cup 2010:Germany vs Spain -by teemonee

On to the second semi final match, Germany and Spain. This match has some serious potential to be highly entertaining. To date in the tournament, every team Spain has faced other than perhaps Chile, has tried the same tactic, suck the life out of the game, clog up the defensive end and hope to weather the storm and find a chance or two on the counter. So far the Swiss were the only team to find success with that style. In the knockout stages Portugal made life difficult for Spain and in the quarters Paraguay very nearly made it work. Though through all that frustration, Spain has emerged and find themselves in the semis.

Spain will finally be playing a team in Germany that does not fear them and will not be afraid to attack. I think Spain will welcome this very much. It is certainly frustrating and exhausting to have to display extreme patience, which in my opinion Spain has done very well. While they have been victorious in every match since their shock defeat at the hands at the Swiss, they haven’t been lighting up any scoreboards. The Spanish midfield had been extremely efficient, controlling much of the ball and David Villa had been their savior, the man who has been able to score on a consistent basis. While the performance from Torres has been awfully disappointing thus far, Spain still possesses tremendous riches in their attack.

Germany has been a big surprise to many, especially the staggering goal totals they have been able to put up. While the loss of Muller will certainly be felt, the play of Ozil, Podalski and Klose have all been very impressive. It was amazing to watch the Germans dismantle Argentina so easily, especially how easily they managed to score goal after goal.

While Germany has been tremendous offensively, they’ve been almost as impressive defensively. Meanwhile, Spain are no slouches themselves in the defensive department and Casillas has made some gorgeous saves. I suppose that is why the price is so good on the over here. While these are two of the most impressive offensive teams in the world, they both have been strong defensively as well.

I just really feel this game should turn out to be a very entertaining match and Spain might find a little more space to attack here after enduring the “we know we’re inferior and so we aren’t going to allow you to pound our keeper with shot after shot at all costs” approach that both Portugal and Paraguay have taken.

Bottom line is their is going to be a TON of offensively skilled players on the pitch on Wednesday, even with the absence of Muller. Ozil, Podalski, Klose, Villa, Torres, Iniesta, Fabergas, Silva, Schweinsteiger, etc, etc….

As far as a winner? I think it’s a mystery. In all honesty, nothing would really shock me. Nothing except a low scoring affair. I definitely think we’ll see some goals here…..I’ve learned my lesson, I won’t promise to chop a finger off or swim across the Atlantic Ocean if I lose, but I feel very confident on this match yielding 3+ goals….Best of luck..
