AFL Aussie Rules
2010-07-18 – Richmond Tigers v North Melbourne Kang
Sports Betting Preview by Costanzo
Richmond Tigers v North Melbourne Kangaroos
AFL Aussie Rules : Australia : AFL Premiership
Venue : Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne
Sunday, 18th July 2010, Start 14:10 AEST

What a match we have here. The Tigers are all of a sudden the
hottest team going around with everyone willing to get on the
bandwagon. I am one of them and they have been good to bet on in
recent weeks.

With this game against a struggling Roos at the MCG, a venue the
Tigers enjoy, I feel their run could continue.
Richmond Tigers (15th, 5-10) Form LWWWW

Against a better and more experienced side last week the Tigers
played with confidence and maturity beyond their years. There is so
much hype around this team now that some are suggesting a finals
appearance is not far off as they are on a very hot streak.
Personally I see it continuing at least another week anyway.

Defensively for the Tigers you have Mitch Farmer and Will Thursfield
who are coming along rapidly as key position players and they
shouldn’t have too many worries against a Roos forward line that
doesn’t have any major names. They will be assisted by the
experience and quality of Chris Newman and Brett Deledio across half
back and there foot skills will go a long way to setting up plenty
of Tiger forward thrusts.

In the midfield there are the likes of Daniel Jackson and Shane Tuck
who have been around for a while but are enjoying this spell of
success for the Tigers. The two main men are Dustin Martin and Shane
Edwards. Martin has a huge future and it appears Edwards does too
after an impressive display last weekend. Trent Cotchin is another
youngster whose ability to get in an under and use the ball well has
him highly regarded by rival
teams.

The man everyone is talking about is Jack Riewoldt. He has been huge
for the Tigers averaging over 5 goals over game across the last 7
games. He has beaten good defenders also, which shows he can play at
the highest level, and with his confidence sky-high there is no
reason to suggest he will not have a similar outing. He will rely on
support from the likes of Ben Nason and Andrew Collins who can chime
in with handy goals at important times throughout the match.
North Melbourne Roos (9th, 7-8) Form : WWWLL

The Roos went to Sydney last Sunday and slumped to a 5 goal defeat.
They only managed to score 55 points on a damp afternoon in the
harbour city. There is still a chance they make the 8 but this is a
game they will need to get 4 points from. The problem could be the
venue as I don’t think the Roos really appreciate playing at the
MCG.

Down back for North it is likely to be Scott Thompson playing on
Riewoldt. Will he utilise his bag of dirty tricks on Jack? It will
be an interesting match-up and if Thompson fails the Roos may move
Robbie Tarrant onto Riewoldt. Michael Firrito and Brady Rawlings
will need to show leadership down back as they are the two veterans
and will be able to set an example for their younger backs.

Brent Harvey is the man for the Roos. If they win you just know
Harvey stats will read something like 33 disposals, 6 clearances, 8
inside 50s, 3 goals. He has been the player of the last decade for
the Roos and will need to be dominant on Sunday. The support will
need to come from players like Ryan Bastinac, Andrew Swallow and
Levi Greenwood. The Roos are a very young side with the exception of
a few and essentially the battle in the midfield will be a battle of
the young brigades for both sides. At this stage I feel the Tiger
youths have a bit more class on their side and that could be the
difference along with Riewoldt.

The forward line is led by Lachie Hansen. He has been a very useful
player for the Roos this year contributing to the scoreboard with a
few bags multiple goals. It won’t be enough for him to be alone this
week, he will need Daniel Wells and Lindsay Thomas to fire. Wells
can play in the centre but the coach feels he can be rotated and up
forward his talents can have direct effect on the scoreboard. Thomas
kicked 7 a few weeks ago so we know he is more than capable.
The Betting Tip

Expect another close Richmond game with the Tigers getting the win
FIXED ODDS BETTING :
Take Richmond to win by between 1-39 paying 2.48 at Centrebet
(Medium-High Stakes)

Bradford v Salford (+10)

It’s incredible to think the Bulls have lost eight in a row but are still giving away eight points here. This is a poor Bradford team who are still without Matt Orford.

Ray Cashmere returns for Salford and he’ll give them some much-needed go-forward but under a new coaching structure I’ll go for the Bulls to win and cover but with no confidence.

St Helens v Harlequins (+16)

This is another game where team news will be crucial. Leon Pryce could return for Saints and if he plays they’ll win and cover.

I’m not totally convinced he’ll play but the Saints players were given a long break this week so should be fresh and keen to play well at home. I’m banking on Pryce playing when I side with the Saints to win and cover.

Castleford v Wakefield (+2)

Cas had won three in a row before last weekend when they went to Warrington and conceded 54 points. That was unbelievable.

Wakefield were in the doldrums but them came up with a huge win over Hull last week. The problem for the Wildcats is they struggle to back good performances up. The Tigers are a better side at home and with Rangi Chase in great form I’ll take them to win a cover. The battle between Chase and Paul Cooke at stand-off is the key to the game.

Warriors v Storm (+2)

The Warriors are in scintillating form but they’re not always a side who can stay at their peak for long. Melbourne have had a turbulent week with their salary-cap issues but now it’s clear a majority of their players will have to leave, they could really pull together for the rest of the season. I think they can go there and win the game at the weekend.

Sharks (+8) v Sea Eagles

Manly have lost four in a row having led matches and been run down. They’ve copped lots of criticism in the week with the accusation their forwards are soft; no-one likes that being thrown at them. They are the choice against an ordinary Cronulla side.

Roosters v Bulldogs (+4)

There are signs the Bulldogs are getting into their stride now but the Roosters have some very smart attacking players in Mitchell Pearce and Todd Carney. They can be too quick for the Bulldogs and comfortably win this one.

While I have tipped Canberra to win this game I think the odds for a 1 – 12 win for Newcastle are too juicy to not take up with a small saver on Knights 13+ @ $6.50. Really this is a must win for Knights to stay in top 8 contention and a win will put them 2 points away from the top 8. The Raiders are coming off that tight 2 point home win against Manly last week but before that had lost 4 games straight. The Knights however are coming of Win Win Bye Win including an impressive away victory against the Titans. I think the Raiders forwards will be a little strong but hopefully the Knights can get the better of them in the backs and come up with a win.

The Raiders are struggling for some form and without Shillington and Learoyd-Lahrs, they lose quite a bit of punch when going forward. Furthermore, their home record is surprisingly not that good this year where they have only twice this year. They will meet a Roosters side that may have also lost Pearce and Myles to Origin, but Anasta returns and expect a big game from Carney who returns to Canberra and he will look to cause some damage to his old club. The Roosters have won the last 3 meetings including a 36-6 win over them last year in Canberra and believe they have enough in them to edge this one

Both sides are erratic and it is hard to predict when either side will turn up for their games. They are both missing some players so this game can go either way, but one thing that i like about the Eels is their defence and believe that they will put enough pressure on the Warriors to cause mistakes and give them good field position. Eventually this should see some points scored. Interesting stat here is that the Warriors have lost 7 of their last 8 matches at Mt Smart Stadium when they play during the day

Obviously a hot & cold Melbourne who have complacency issues the week after a good game. They have shown what they can do against some very good teams and I’d expect them on song this week. Saints are going along very nicely as the run home looms and, riding a five game streak, it’s not always easy to just show up in peak form. Only Melbourne’s second game at Docklands this season but the intensity they can bring is the main thing with this bet. I feel mid twenties would be a fairer place for this line.
